Our first day in the Philippines was spent exploring Intramuros, the old Spanish part of town, with Fabian (from Germany) who we met by sharing a taxi from the airport. So far, we’ve not bumped into many other travellers and have been told my locals that we are in the off-season, so spending time with someone else was nice change! After exploring the Spanish quarters and reading about its history, we took a walk into Chinatown for some noodle soup and later found ourselves in a residential part of town, where the locals were desperate for us to take their photographs! That evening, we went for some African cuisine (we still hadn’t tried Filipino food yet that day!), the boys had a can of special brew from 7/11 and we went to watch some Midget and Lady Boxing minus the midgets sadly - although one did referee the women’s fight. I was wary of how the women would react to me denying them a tip afterwards in case I was their next opponent, but I did leave the bar unscathed.
